Rumor has it Verizon will be launching the HTC Incredible pretty soon. It's swirling in rumors right now. Reports are that it will have 6-8GB of onboard memory with an optional expansion slot for 32 more, an 8 mp camera, and a 3.7-4 inch AMOLED display. Definitely stuff that would compare to the EVO, except that the EVO has 4G.
Let's see how far behind the 4th generation iPhone (which is unlikely to be 4G) is going to be behind these phones. The prospect of it having a touch sensitive backside doesn't seem that appealing to me, maybe because my own backside is pretty touch sensitive.
On the day of the iPad release, I thought nothing would be better than to showcase the one device that is not only going to hurt Apple, the iPhone, iPhone3G and the iPhone3GS, but also the one device that will castrate their successor, the purported iPhoneHD. While we don't know much about the iPhoneHD, we do know a lot about the new Sprint HTC Evo 4G, which was announced a little over a week ago, and it definitely caught Apple with their pants down. As brought to us by Reuters (link), Taiwan's Elan is suing Apple over infringement of two patents, both pertaining to the use of a touch screen to detect the position of fingers, and multitouch.
This is particularly amusing because it happens in the wake of the recent suit by Apple against Taiwan's HTC for infringement of 20 patents, including multitouch (link). We know that Nokia has also filed a suit against Apple with Apple countersuing.
This is just another example of Apple trying to say that they've innovated everything, which I'll show more examples of in a future post.
We all know what's really motivating the HTC suit. If it was really about Multitouch, Apple would have sued Palm as well, but there are two reasons they haven't. 1. Palm owns patents on so many things, including such basic things as devices that have calendars and alert you with new notifications if there are events. 2. Apple is suing Google through HTC. By taking out a less defended outlet for Android, Apple doesn't have take on Google directly.
Let's hope the ITC listens to reason and drops HTC's complaint regarding ridiculously broad patents that cover almost all portable electronic devices.
